Where to Use

Suitably primed new and previously painted stable cement plaster, concrete, porous brickwork, fibre-cement and gypsum plaster.

General Preparations

  • All surfaces must be clean, sound and dry.
  • To ease application, sand previously painted stable surfaces.
  • Previously painted sound surfaces can be washed with sugar soap and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Smooth out imperfections with Skim and repair cracks with Fill. To stabilize chalky, dry and porous surfaces, apply PlasterSeal / PlasterPrime / WallPrime or BondAll.
  • Remove all loose flakes and apply PlasterSeal / PlasterPrime / WallPrime or BondAll, to obtain a stable surface.
  • For water damaged and alkaline surfaces, apply WallPrime / PlasterPrime / BondAll or DampCure, to stabilize surface.
  • Apply a single coat Universal UnderCoat on previously painted stable alkyd systems to improve adhesion.

Precautions

  • Substrate to be coated must be clean, sound and dry. The substrate upon which a paint coating is applied will influence its stability, durability and longevity. Sand, cement mixtures, plasterwork, concrete and screeds needs to comply with SABS 1090 standards and SABS 0164-1 in terms of MPA strength. Plaster mix must be applied at a minimum thickness of 10mm and allowed to cure to standard. Laminin will not be held liable for any product failure or damage to the paint film due to plaster cracks.
  • Do not paint or skim over surfaces with a moisture content above 15%, measured using an ultrasonic Protimeter or similar approved. In the case of a WME (pin type) measurement, reading must be below 5%. It is the responsibility of the applicator to adhere to these restrictions.
  • Remove all loose flakes and apply a Laminin substrate specific primer / undercoat to obtain a stable surface.
  • To even out interior plasterwork, apply a scraper coat of your desired Laminin skimming compound and sand to an even finish. It is recommended to apply a plaster primer before application of topcoat. For very porous or friable surfaces a plaster primer must be applied before application of skimming compound.
  • To ease application, sand previously painted stable surfaces
  • Washed previously painted sound surfaces with sugar soap and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Coastal exteriors exposed for more than 24 hours must be rinsed with clean water to remove salt deposits before recoating.
  • For moisture damaged areas the root cause must first be addressed before painting can commence:
  • Rising damp is the upward movement of water due to capillary action in the lower sections of walls and other ground supported structures. It rarely rises above 1.5m.
  • Penetrating damp (moisture ingress) is descending and/or lateral and might be as a result of rain.
  • Efflorescence is white salty deposits left behind a coating after moisture has passed through the paint film. These deposits can damage the paint film and may lead to peeling, flaking, blisters and discolouration.
  • Laminin will not be held liable for efflorescence (white salty deposits), blisters, peeling or any other moisture related failures. Laminin’s quality guarantee excludes damage to the coating system due to or as a result of moisture / dampness.
  • Stir paint well with a flat paddle to achieve a homogeneous base that will ensure colour and film consistency.
  • Avoid painting in moist / humid conditions. To prevent damage to the paint film, there should be no rain forecast for at least 7 days.
  • Application conditions and surface temperature should be between 10°C –35°C with a relative humidity of less than 75%. Painting over cold substrates might lead to permanent pinholes and craters in the paint film. Painting over hot substrates might lead to permanent pinholes and blisters in the paint film or delamination from substrate.
  • Do not paint in direct sunlight as this will result in the paint drying to fast leading to visible “lap-marks”. Windy conditions might have a similar effect and can cause a deposit of dust particles on the wet paint.
  • Ensure colour and sheen level consistency by painting from of the same production batch.
  • Tint bases contain fewer litres than advertised.
  • Allow 7 days for paint to dry properly and 30 days to reach full strength. Do not wash or abrade newly painted surfaces until properly cured.
  • Spreading rates are theoretical and are based on smooth flat non penetrating surfaces. Substrate conditions and porosity will influence the spreading rate.
  • To achieve opacity and formulated sheen level adhere to specified spreading rates. Spreading rate is the amount of paint that needs to be applied per square meter to achieve the formulated wet and dry film thickness (WFT / DFT). Dry film thickness can be measured.
  • Over spreading will lead to poor opacity and will compromise the quality and longevity of the coating
  • Applying the paint too thick will result in sheen build up, sagging and mud cracks of the coating.
  • Adhere to specified over coating times. Premature over coating might lead to poor opacity, compromised film thickness and finish. Temperature will influence drying and over coating time.
  • Use quality application tools (roller, brush etc.) to avoid poor opacity, flow, levelling and picture framing.
  • Do not touch up as this will lead to poor opacity, sheen and colour variations. When doing repairs, paint from corner to corner.
  • Laminin quality guarantee only applies if all products used are manufactured or approved by Laminin.

Colour Selection

  • Colours tinted that fall outside of Laminin Largo’s formal tinting system may have risks regarding poor opacity, early fading, UV resistance, over and under tinting or alkaline attack. Please consult an official Laminin agent for advice.
  • Do not alter factory standard colours as this will compromise the products longevity i.e. fading, UV and alkaline resistance, colour consistency and opacity.
  • Bright colours plays an important role in colour selection, even though Laminin only makes use of lightfast pigments certain bright colours have a natural tendency for poorer opacity and UV resistance and might be more prone to alkaline attack. Please consult an official Laminin agent for the best possible advice.
  • Colour variations due to efflorescence (White salty deposits) (alkaline burn or attack) will not be covered under early fading or product failure.
  • The colour, white, may require a 3rd topcoat to achieve opacity and full obliteration.

Health & Safety

  • Keep out of children’s reach.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke during any application
  • Ensure appropriate ventilation during application and drying.
  • Products may be harmful if swallowed.
  • Wear protective equipment during preparation, application and cleaning.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact, immediately rinse with clean water and seek medical advice
  • Avoid contact with skin. In case of contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If skin irritation occurs, seek medical advice.
