Laminin Coatings Laminin Coatings

Water Based    Solvent/Oil Based

012_BListers

Blisters
Blisters or bubbles in dry film.

Remedy

  • Remove loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%.
  • Apply a deep penetrating plaster primer, DampCure / PlasterPrime or WallPrime to stabilize surface before repainting.

Prevention / Tips

  • Do not paint over substrates with a moisture content above 15%.
  • Avoid painting in moist conditions or in direct sunlight as this may result in solvent entrapment / heat blisters.
002_CRATERING

Cratering
Pinholes on dry film.

Remedy

  • Sand to a uniform, smooth and stable surface.
  • Repaint entire surface (corner to corner).

Prevention / Tips

  • Adhere to specified spreading rate and drying time of coating.
  • Do not apply coating too thick or wet on wet. Avoid painting over substrates with a surface temperature below 5°C.
003_Efflorescence

Efflorescence
Entrapped moisture or ingress lead to elevated alkaline levels.
Efflorescence residue will be visible on the surface of the paint coating.
This is commonly mistaken as pigment fading due to UV exposure.

Remedy

  • High pressure wash to remove efflorescence, loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%.
  • Apply a deep penetrating plaster primer, DampCure / PlasterPrime or WallPrime to stabilize surface before repainting.

Prevention / Tips

  • Do not paint over uncured cementitious substrates.
  • Allow newly plastered surfaces to cure until moisture content is below 15%.
004_FADING

Fading
Bright yellow, orange and red pigments tend to fade sooner compared to oxides.
UV exposure attacks the pigment structure leading to a loss of colour i.e. yellow to pink.

Remedy

  • Insist on light fast pigments when repainting.

Prevention / Tips

  • Do not paint over substrates with a moisture content above 15%.
  • Be cautious when selecting colours for exterior use. Insist on light fast pigments.
005_IMPERFECTIONS

Imperfections
Non uniform marks on prepared and finished substrates.

Remedy

Prevention / Tips

  • If a smooth uniform finish is required, skim entire surface with Kwartz Skim.
  • Sheen paints are prone to highlight surface imperfections.
006_PARAPETS

Parapets
Early weathering on parapets.

Remedy

  • High pressure wash to remove loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%.
  • Seal parapets with HydroFlex in a criss-cross pattern.

Prevention / Tips

  • Always seal parapets before application of topcoat to prevent early weathering.
007_PICTURE-FRAMING

Picture framing
A non-uniform appearance may occur when a wall is painted with a roller and the edges are cut in with a brush.
Cut in and roller application must happen while paint film is still wet to form a homogenous film. If cut in happens after roller application, this might form a darker patch due to an additional dry film thickness.

Remedy

  • If cut in appears lighter – Spot prime with original colour and wait until dry. Repaint the complete surface from corner to corner according to the methodology explained above.
  • If cut in appears darker – Roll the wall with the original colour up until cut in line. Repaint the complete surface from corner to corner according to the methodology explained above.
  • Alternatively – Try to sand entire surface until uniform in appearance and repaint the complete surface from corner to corner according to the methodology explained above.

Prevention / Tips

  • Cut in before roller application.
  • Roller application into cut in before paint dries to create a uniform film.
008_POOR-OPACITY

Poor Opacity
Uneven obliteration.

Remedy

  • If painting over an existing bright or dark colour, apply a barrier coat i.e. Universal UnderCoat or MaxiCoat (for acrylic systems only) over previously painted stable surfaces.
  • When painting with bright colours, apply a tinted basecoat with a compatible hue.
  • For more expert advice, please contact your nearest Laminin dealer.

Prevention / Tips

  • Adhere to specified spreading rate to achieve obliteration.
  • When painting with bright colours, apply a tinted basecoat with a compatible hue.
  • For more expert advice, please contact your nearest Laminin dealer.
009_RISING-DAMP

Rising damp
Damp usually does not rise higher than 1.2m from ground level. See efflorescence or blisters.

Remedy

  • High pressure wash to remove efflorescence, loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%.
  • Apply a deep penetrating plaster primer to stabilize surface before repainting.
    DampCure / PlasterPrime or WallPrime

Prevention / Tips

  • Water should flow away from the structure.
  • Keep ground levels in mind when landscaping.
010_RUST

Rust or Flaking Paint
Mild and galvanized steel.

Remedy

  • Mild steel: remove rust, loose and flaking paint.
  • Spot prime with a rust converter where rust cannot be completely removed, apply HydroEtch / MSPrime rust resistant primer on all bare areas before repainting.
  • Galvanized steel: remove rust, loose and flaking paint.
  • Apply HydroEtch rust resistant primer on all bare areas before repainting. If rust cannot be removed completely it is suggested to replace galvanized sheet.

Prevention / Tips

  • Do not paint over rusted surfaces or in moist or humid conditions.
  • Wash with an appropriate degreaser or galvanized iron cleaner and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Apply HydroEtch / MSPrime primer over a clean, dry and stabile surface before application of topcoat.
011_SNAIL-TRAILS

Snail trails
Streak marks on newly painted surface.

Remedy

  • Sand to a uniform stable surface.
  • Spot prime streak marks with topcoat, repaint entire surface (corner to corner).

Prevention / Tips

  • Avoid painting in moist / humid conditions.
  • To allow applied paint to cure, there should be no rain forecast for at least 7 days.
012_STAIN-MARKS

Stain marks
Yellow / brown or black stains.

Remedy

  • Water stains: allow to dry and apply UniversalUndercoat stain-locking primer.
  • Mildew / algae: wash affected areas with anti-fungal solution, rinse well with clean water, allow to dry and apply UniversalUndercoat stain-locking primer.

Prevention / Tips

013_STRUCTURAL-CRACKS

Structural Cracks
Surface cracks due to settlement or movement of structure.

Remedy

  • Open cracks, remove efflorescence, loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%, apply PlasterSeal / PlasterPrime / WallPrime / DampCure to stabilise surface.
  • Fill cracks with Kwartz, spot prime with mentioned primers before repainting.

Prevention / Tips

  • Cracks can lead to paint failure. If problem persists after remedy, consult an engineer.
014_TILE-ROOFS

Tile Roof
Flaking paint from tile roofs.

Remedy

  • High pressure wash to remove loose and flaking paint.
  • Allow to dry until moisture content is below 15%.
  • Apply BondAll Acrylic until a stable surface has been achieved.
  • Apply 2 coats Skin / ApEx / SunShield / Roof&Pave.

Prevention / Tips

  • Due to loose particles, porosity and disintegration, surfaces need to be stabilized with a deep penetrating acrylic bonding agent.
015_TOUCH-UPS

Touch-ups
Colour variation due to touch-up spots being an additional dry film thickness that might reflect lighter or darker. It is not recommended to do touch-ups. If repairs need to be done on painted walls – Repair, spot prime with plaster primer and allow to dry, spot prime with original paint and colour and allow to dry. Repaint the complete surface from corner to corner according to the methodology explained above.

Remedy

  • Sand touch-up marks to a uniform finish and repaint the complete surface from corner to corner according to the methodology explained above.

Prevention / Tips

  • It is not recommended to do touch-ups, especially with sheen paints.
